William Henry Roberts, JR.

The Folk Hero of Hico

William Henry Roberts, Jr., better known as Billy the Kid, has been the subject of numerous songs, legends, movies, books, and controversies, and had as many aliases (Bonney, Kid Atrim, McCarty) as occupations (horse rustler, outlaw, gambler, cowboy). McCarty has managed to acquire a timeless reputation as both gun slinger and folk hero.

Billy The Kid Museum is about teaching and preserving history while giving visitors and residents a place to come together to share and appreciate the life and times of Billy the Kid and to discover and experience what it was like to live in the Old West. In a sense you’re walking through a museum as you stroll through the town of Hico.

Sue Land, the museum director, says the museum receives visitors from all over the world which is pretty fervent support for a man who is thought to have killed 21 men.

So come on down or up from whichever direction you are traveling, we are looking forward to your visit. We guarantee it will be entertaining, educational, and just flat out fun!
